From the Heart / Philanthropy

heartland When we think Valentine's Day, we think hearts, and just like you, we are tickled by adorable Valentine's Day images - one of our few opportunities to embrace props and cutesy. But, in the true spirit of celebrating love, we want to showcase these beautiful people, each of whom knows the real meaning of giving and receiving a gift from the heart. Every year, it is Laurie's privilege to contribute to Heartland Blood Centers' annual calendar by photographing regular people with exceptional stories. It's an honor for us to meet these special people who give us the gift of inspiration, and truly touch our hearts. - LN

Supporting Some Very Special Moms | Giving Back

Karen Dove Cabral FoundationSometimes life feels really tough, especially for moms with young children. But imagine being a young mom and discovering you have breast cancer, or even worse, being pregnant, raising young children, and learning you have breast cancer.

Enter the Evanston-based Karen Dove Cabral Foundation, a one-of-a-kind resource for young mothers battling breast cancer while managing the same challenges we all face in raising children. Unlike other organizations that are dedicated to raising money to combat breast cancer, the Karen Dove Cabral Foundation is unique in its focus on improving the quality of life for young mothers fighting breast cancer, and providing vital assistance by paying for critical treatments and services not covered by insurance.

Please join Soben Studios in supporting this fantastic organization.

On Friday, October 18th, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, at Equinox, 799 Central Avenue, Highland Park, come enjoy a fun and memorable evening with food, drinks, a silent auction, and a yoga practice for all levels benefiting the Karen Dove Cabral Foundation.

Sparkle & Shine with Girls on the Run

It may be getting chilly but it’s not too late to get tickets to the hottest event in Chicago! It’s the eleventh annual Sparkle and Shine Gala benefiting Girls on the Run, at The Drake Hotel in Chicago, Friday, November 19th, at 8:00. Featuring a live band, hors d’oeuvres with a sushi station, a 4-hour open bar and a live and silent auction with awesome prizes (including a Soben Studios photo session), this is a not-be-missed benefit which promises to put the “fun” in fundraising. For more information about Sparkle and Shine, or to register, click here. The Girls on the Run Program is a national program for girls ages 8-13 years old which inspires self-respect and healthy lifestyles through a combination of running and an interactive curriculum. All proceeds from the Gala will help Girls on the Run expand its program so that every girl in Chicagoland can be a Girl on the Run. Currently, there are over 84 schools on the waiting list for Girls on the Run programs. Please join Soben Studios in supporting this unique and worthwhile program that empowers girls today and helps them reach their full potential tomorrow and beyond. - LN

Make A Wish

We were absolutely thrilled to be part of the Make A Wish foundation's Wish Ball this year. Soben Studios proudly donated photography sessions for both portraits and parties - and we cannot wait to meet the lucky winners! Dana Carvey was the featured special guest, who was a complete hit (of course!). "This occasion is a wonderful way to celebrate the work of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and bring our mission to life for our supporters," said Stephanie Springs, Chief Executive Officer of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois. "It a powerful experience for everyone as we not only laughed with Dana Carvey, but were deeply touched by stories from our wish families." I hope you enjoy the shots above, which were kindly emailed to us from the Wish Ball chairperson (not taken by Soben Studios). I have no idea who the lovely family is with Dana Carvey - but I do know one thing - they had "a ball".

Good Karma to All!

First of all, let’s re-emphasize the point that all moms are working moms! Now let’s talk about mom4profit. As you may recall from an earlier post, Laurie is a member of mom4profit, a diverse group of women who are juggling being moms with being entrepreneurs.  Being a mom is a 24/7 job; growing your own business is a 24/7 job. You do the math…. How do these Energizer bunnies do it?! Let’s meet some of these hard-working (sleep-deprived) mom4profit women and spotlight their professional endeavors.

Meet Allison Harris of Highland Park, owner of Karma Healing Solutions. Allison is a clinical esthetician  who uses customized blends of natural remedies and aromatherapy to create individualized treatments and therapies for a variety of conditions ranging from stress reduction and sleep problems, to sinus infections and skin conditions. Her natural remedies are free of synthetic chemicals, dyes, fragrance and harmful toxic chemicals.

Allison enjoys educating people about using common at-home holistic remedies and conducts workshops and wellness events on various topics pertaining to natural living, holistic health, and wellness for families. Karma Healing Solutions “spa parties” are hugely popular! As a “mom’treprener,”  Allison is clearly a walking testimonial Karma Healing Solutions’ effectiveness in promoting stress reduction and good karma.

We’d also like to do a shout-out to Bright Pink. Allison is thrilled to be presenting a pampering and educational workshop for the women of Bright Pink.  Bright Pink is a national non-profit organization that provides education and support to young women who are at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer. By arming young women with knowledge, options and a great attitude, Bright Pink offers support and companionship and strives to empower women to take control of their breast and ovarian health and in turn, grant them the freedom and peace of mind to live a beautiful and fulfilling life. Thanks, Allison, for making us aware of this fantastic organization!

Silent Stars

Some of you are aware that my oldest daughter has had severe struggles with her speech. At the age of 18 months old, she was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. We were actually told a few months later that there was a very real chance that she would never speak. Thank you to the countless hours of therapy provided by many (and one very special woman in particular), my daughter can talk. Not only can she talk, sometimes .... she does not stop. We may not understand every thing she says, but she has come such a long way. My three year old also has apraxia, we've recently discovered.

On May 2 at Pinstripes in Northbrook, Silent Stars is hosting an amazing fundraiser to support CASANA (an organization dedicated to serving children with apraxia, their parents and their therapists). Please consider grabbing the kids and heading out for an afternoon of fun, bowling, pizza and philanthropy ... from 2-5 at Pinstripes. For more information, please visit Silent Stars.

Oh, and did I mention that you may just win some gift certificates to Soben Studios if you go???? Hope to see you there!

Scope this Out: "Chip in for Camp" SCOPE-Midwest Annual Benefit

Do you have the same fond memories of camp that I do? I think back and I long for those carefree, action-packed days when swimming in the lake seemed like a reasonable substitute for a shower; when you got that first taste of freedom from parental watch; when you were so excited to be able to get-up on waterskis for the first time, or; when you learned how to rig a sailboat. Did you have your first kiss at overnight camp? Was it your first time on horseback? My oldest son is going away to overnight camp this summer (when did he get that old?!), and I miss him just thinking about it!  But at the same time, I am SO excited for him! He's going to have so many new experiences (probably homesickness will be among them), and summer camp is going to enrich his life in so many ways. I am fortunate to be able to send my  children to camp, but I am well aware that many parents can only dream of offering their children a camp experience.  No doubt, some parents may not even recognize that far-reaching benefits camp offers children. This is where SCOPE comes in. SCOPE (Summer Camp Opportunities Provide an Edge) is a 19-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to the belieftethat every child, regardless of their socio-economic background deserves the benefits of a summer camp experience.

SCOPE-Midwest will be hosting it's annual fundraising benefit on Friday, April 16th at 7:30 p.m. at Chicago's Sheraton Hotel & Towers. Tickets are still available for this event which will feature, cocktails, dinner, dancing, casino games and a silent auction (with Soben Items!!) .

Register or donate

Please join me in supporting SCOPE-Midwest. Together, we can help underserved and deserving children have the oportunity to escape the struggles they face at home and discover the joy of camp -- a place to feel safe, play, learn, laugh and grow.
